‘Diary of a Chambermaid’ review: Fifty Shades of Grey Poupon?

August 4, 2016 - Fifty Shades of Grey

A grade of hubris is compulsory for any stream Continental auteur to re-adapt Octave Mirbeau’s 1900 succes de scandale “Diary of a Chambermaid,” given a fast organisation with a names Jean Renoir and Luis Bunuel. In this slender, sleazy update, however, Benoit Jacquot has during slightest offset his with a magnitude of individualist japery: While it’s a slightest clear of a 3 versions, it arguably comes closest to relating a boldness of a source. Starring an ideally expel Lea Seydoux as a sly menial of a title, seeking self-advancement during a responsibility of her distant employers, a film milks some sprightly comedy from a upstairs-downstairs peekaboo, yet is too spacious to remonstrate in a depiction of recurrent amorous emplacement — creation for a “Diary” that infrequently feels reduction exposing as it goes along.

It’s not startling to see Jacquot reteaming with a now-ubiquitous Seydoux: Their prior collaboration, 2012’s subtly rebellious house play “Farewell, My Queen,” won France’s lofty Louis Delluc Award and surpassed financial expectations both during home and abroad.

“Chambermaid” might infer too individualist to replicate that success, yet it does again uncover how a sensibilities of star and executive element any other. Jacquot likes his duration pieces mounted with blunt modernity, contracting inner stylistic contrariety to indicate out how amicable and passionate mores have subsequently evolved; in Seydoux, a coolly 21st-century participation with a Madonna-like facilities of a silent-movie goddess, he has found a formally angular, fugitive muse.
